Over the summer I've been reading and watching Kuroko no Basket (Kuroko's Basketball). Actually, I've been following the anime since it's debut in spring and later picked up the manga. Great series, kind of addictive, regardless of whether or not you're into sports. Storytelling that doesn't limit its fanbase and keeps the viewer (or reader) engaged is an art in and of itself. I can't stop reading it and I don't even have much of an interest in basketball.

Anyway, I'm also an old school fan of the original Dragonball Z (I'm talking fansubs from back in the mid-late 90s) and I couldn't help smiling when I found this extra page in one of the later chapters of KnB:

There's a couple more dbz references in this series, too!
Despite the poor reviews it's been receiving, I went to see Snow White and the Huntsman in theatres yesterday. Visually, the film looked amazing and I've been curious about it for a long while. My love for motion design is one facet that  compelled me to see the movie—and I'm glad to say that I was not disappointed. It was a dark film and the cinematography conveyed that nicely. Everything was shot quite well.

Concept-wise it seems like the movie's been getting poor reviews. Mostly in the sense that it wasn't original and ripped certain elements from other films. For me it seems more likely that those elements were "inspired" rather than "lifted" but to each their own. Actually, there was a scene I recognized right away that was obviously lifted inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. Thinking back, I thought it was enchanting to see as were other fantasy elements in the film. The dark forest largely reminded me of the Dragonlance books.

Something else worth noting: this is probably among the only movies that made me want to sit through a portion of the ending credits just to admire the motionography. It complimented the song, Breath of Life, quite well (which was apparently recorded specifically for the movie). Definitely something I have to recreate in order to get my skills to where I want them!

As for the film itself, I enjoyed it. Although, it had potential to be so much more. Snow White's characterization was too flat. It should have had way more depth and that goes for the Queen as well. It was a movie that had strong female leads but, c'mon, while I was watching it it felt like there probably hadn't been any heavy influence from women at all during the conceptual phase of the film. I sincerely hope that wasn't the case.

Sakamichi no Apollon (Kids on the Slope) is one of the newer series I've been following recently. Shinichiro Watanabe and Yoko Kanno never seem to disappoint me and I always end up loving whichever anime these two are involved in together. The very end of episode 10 of Sakamichi no Apollon left me a bit shocked though.
Oh, Sentarou~ His character is usually so upbeat but given his past and the pain he's carried for so long and now this... my heart breaks for him!

I'm sure it'll work out in the next episode. Maybe this scene was even meant to look like something that it's not. Still, seeing this nonetheless left me anxiously waiting for episode 11 subs to be released.
I sold my Hellsing DVD box set back in '07. I needed fast cash at the time but it was still hard to part with. If anything the below photo proves I'll always love this series:

It's an Alucard plushie I picked up at AN2012. Cute, isn't he? He even has Jackal.

(Sigh) Oh well, I'll always have the manga. Besides, I think most old school fans would agree that Ultimate is the adaptation that the TV series should've been.

Lately, I’ve rediscovered my love for the Biker Mice — from the 90s cartoon Biker Mice from Mars. Imagine the surge of nostalgic joy that came over me when I inadvertently bumped into an episode on Youtube! As far as I know, the broadcast of the series here in Canada was terminated while the final season was being aired, so I never did get to see the end of the show. Until now. On youtube in a shitty resolution, but I'm still happy to have been able to watch all three parts of Once Upon A Time on Mars after all these years.

As for the rest of the series, there aren't that many episodes available on Youtube. And after a quick search I discovered only the first season was released on DVD in the original English dialog. Big disappointment. Like many fans, I'm very much willing to buy a complete DVD box set of the entire series and can't believe there isn't one available. Animated shows like this one were a part of my childhood and it'd be nice to have as a collectors item.
Luckily, I still own VHS recordings of most of the series (not to mention plenty more 90s cartoons) stashed in my basement somewhere. I'm sure I have the majority of season one and two and maybe even quite a few of season three. I'm definitely going to dig those out but I still would've preferred a DVD set. I can't seem to find torrents of the final season (three) online either.

I first heard about the new version of the show back in 2006. It was essentially a continuation that was airing in the UK and I was able to watch a couple of the episodes at the time through torrents. But it just wasn't the same. Not surprising given that remakes and/or continuations in any genre rarely live up to its predecessors or original classics. The 2006 addition seems to be featured on Youtube right now so I'll most likely give it another chance, although I seriously doubt it will satiate my hankering to see the entire final season of the original series.

Oh well, at least there is a good selection of (quality) fan fiction available for the reading pleasure of fans. I may even make time to write a few myself this summer.

Tonight I re-watched a couple Hellsing Ultimate episodes and was pleasantly reminded of how much I enjoy this series. I've followed the manga but haven't kept up with the Dark Horse release for awhile. Icons of the third episode are available below. I had fun making these and will probably have more Hellsing stuff in the future.

These Samurai Champloo icons are from episode #8, particularly from the scene when Mugen and Jin are drunk. I also added some Trigun icons to choose from.

Bored. I made a selection of icons of Nicolas Cage, Gary Dourdan and Richard Gere. Why those three? Just randomly selected from a small group of celebrities I admire (and/or happen to find attractive). ^_^

More to come of other actors in the future.
